A bit about me
Shine works with children, teenagers, and adults across the Sydney metropolitan area and Australia-wide via telehealth. The practice operates on a community-delivery model, meaning every session takes place in the client’s home, school, preschool, community setting, or by video. There is no clinic to travel to.
This delivery model supports better functional outcomes for both paediatric and adult clients. Communication skills are practised in the same environments where they need to be used, which improves how reliably those skills generalise into daily life.
Bilingual work is a substantial part of the caseload, not a side note. About a third of clients are English and Mandarin families across Canterbury-Bankstown and the Inner West. Bilingual assessment is delivered in both languages where appropriate, which reduces the risk of a child being incorrectly identified as language-delayed when assessed only in English. Speech Pathology Australia publishes detailed guidance for families on how bilingual assessment should work.
How I work
The approach is strength-based and functional. Strength-based means therapy starts from what the person can already do, with the assessment used to direct focus rather than define the work. Functional means every session is designed to change something in the client’s daily communication life, not to lift a test score in isolation.
Speech pathology works best when the client becomes the agent of change. For preschoolers on the Lidcombe fluency programme, that means coaching parents to deliver a specific feedback pattern at home and meeting weekly to check progress. For adults working on stuttering with the Camperdown programme, that means building tools the client can use independently, without needing a clinician in the room. The work is designed to make itself unnecessary.
Where I work across Sydney
Face-to-face sessions across the Inner West, St George, Canterbury-Bankstown, and Eastern Suburbs, based out of Arncliffe. Suburbs visited regularly include Tempe, Rockdale, Hurstville, Bankstown, Marrickville, Bexley, Kogarah, and Burwood. Telehealth is available anywhere in Australia for most adult presentations, older children, and teenagers.
For families outside the 30-kilometre Arncliffe radius who need a one-off standardised assessment and written report, out-of-area assessments are available via telehealth or a single home visit. This option suits families who need documentation for a school or funding body but are not looking for ongoing therapy from this practice.
Registration and checks
Professional registration is held with Speech Pathology Australia at Certified Practising Speech Pathologist (CPSP) status. The CPSP designation requires ongoing professional development and peer review. Qualifications include a Bachelor of Speech Pathology from the University of Newcastle, a Working with Children Check for NSW paediatric work, and an NDIS Worker Screening Check for NDIS clients.
Note on NDIS registration: Shine and Speak is not NDIS-registered as a provider. NDIS registration is required only to work with NDIA-managed clients (the category in which the NDIS pays the provider directly). Plan-managed and self-managed participants may engage unregistered providers, and these two categories cover the majority of NDIS participants. Plan managers and support coordinators can confirm a participant’s plan type on request.
