Speech Therapy Assessment Sydney

Every assessment is different because every person is different. Age, reason for referral, and what the report needs to achieve all change what I do. But some things are consistent across every assessment I run.

I start with standardised testing. These are validated tools that produce scores comparable to age norms. The specific tools depend on the presentation. Language assessment tools are different from speech sound tools, which are different from literacy tools. I choose the right ones for the reason you have booked. The results are meaningful to GPs, paediatricians, NDIS planners, and school learning support teams.

I also observe informally, usually during play with young children or conversation with older clients. The test score tells me where a person sits against a population. Informal observation tells me how they actually use language in daily life. Both matter. When they tell me different things, the informal observation usually wins, because functional communication is the point.

For paediatric assessments, I always include a parent or carer interview. You know your child’s communication better than any test can show. For adult clients, I include a family or carer interview where it is relevant and consented.

The written report is where I put the most effort. Results, yes. But also a functional interpretation in plain English. And practical recommendations. GPs should be able to read it in two minutes. Schools should be able to extract the key points for a support plan. NDIS planners should see the relevant supports clearly. I do not write reports that go into a filing cabinet without anything actionable inside.

I always end an assessment with a parent coaching session. Practical strategies based on what I found. You leave with something to do at home before therapy even begins.

I do face-to-face assessments across the Inner West, St George, Canterbury-Bankstown, and Eastern Suburbs. Arncliffe is my base and I regularly visit Tempe, Rockdale, Hurstville, Bankstown, Marrickville, Bexley, and Kogarah. Telehealth assessments are available anywhere in Australia.

I prefer home or school-based assessments where possible. Children genuinely perform differently in familiar environments. I have assessed the same child in a clinic room and at their kitchen table and gotten meaningfully different results from the informal observation component. For adults post-stroke, the home context gives a much better picture of functional communication than a clinical chair in a room they have never been in before.

I speak English and Mandarin. For bilingual families, I run assessments in English, Mandarin, or both. Assessing a bilingual child only in English consistently underestimates their true language level because the test norms are built on monolingual English speakers. That is not a minor issue. It leads to wrong conclusions.

Voice assessment is part of the speech pathology assessment services I provide. Voice problems can include persistent hoarseness, reduced vocal volume, vocal fatigue, or a change in voice quality that has not resolved on its own. A voice assessment covers breath support, resonance, vocal effort, and how the voice is being used in daily contexts. It includes a clinical history, perceptual rating, and referral recommendations for ENT investigation if structural vocal cord involvement is suspected.

A voice assessment is appropriate when: a teacher or professional voice user whose voice does not recover between working days, an adult whose voice changed after illness or a surgical procedure, or a child whose hoarseness has persisted longer than two to four weeks without explanation. ENT surgeons and laryngologists work alongside speech pathologists on voice cases that require both medical and behavioural management. I arrange referrals when clinical findings suggest structural involvement is likely.
