When telehealth speech therapy works well

Telehealth is the right format for a lot of families and adults. The most common reasons people choose it over in-person are practical rather than clinical. You live outside my face-to-face service area, or in regional New South Wales with limited local providers. Your kid is at school every day and the only slots that work are in the evening, when fitting a clinic drive across Sydney is not happening. Travel is a problem because of work, siblings, or mobility. Your child engages much better at home than in an unfamiliar clinical room. You are immunocompromised or just do not want to sit in waiting rooms.

There are more specific cases too. You need a one-off assessment for NDIS or for a school enrolment decision, and in-person is not practical. Your primary-school-aged child can sit at a desk for focused work, so telehealth actually works for them. Your adult family member is recovering from something but going out is still tiring.

If you are not sure whether telehealth will work for your situation, book a free 15-minute discovery call. I will tell you honestly whether the goals fit the format, or whether you should be looking at home visits instead.

When telehealth is not the best choice

Telehealth is not ideal for every presentation. I recommend in-person sessions when:

For these situations, home-based face-to-face is usually better.

How it helps

How telehealth sessions are structured

Sessions run through secure video. I send a link before each appointment and run the session from my consulting space in Arncliffe. For paediatric sessions, a parent or carer usually needs to be in the room to support the child and help with anything that needs hands-on work. For older kids, teenagers, and adults, a carer is not required unless there is a specific reason.

Materials are all digital. Picture cards, games, and worksheets either go up on screen or get sent ahead so you can print them. The assessment tools I use for telehealth have been validated for online administration, so the scores are comparable to in-person testing. Written reports are identical; you cannot tell from the report whether the assessment happened in person or on video.

One thing that sometimes surprises families: NDIS pays the same rate for telehealth as for in-person sessions. There is no discount for video and no extra fee. Sessions run the same length.

Where I work

Telehealth speech pathology across Sydney and Australia

Telehealth is available anywhere in Australia with a reliable internet connection. I work with families in Sydney suburbs outside my regular face-to-face range, regional New South Wales, and interstate. I also work with Sydney families who prefer telehealth over home visits, particularly in the Eastern Suburbs, Lower North Shore, and Northern Beaches where travel time from Arncliffe makes face-to-face less efficient than video.

For Sydney families who prefer a mixed format, I run some sessions in your home and others via telehealth depending on the week and the goal. This works well during school term when face-to-face sessions are harder to schedule.

Bilingual sessions in English and Mandarin are available via telehealth. For other languages, TIS National interpreters can join telehealth sessions at no cost for NDIS participants.

Telehealth Speech Therapy questions

Make an enquiry
Is telehealth as effective as in-person sessions?
For most presentations, yes. Voice therapy, fluency work, cognitive-communication goals, language therapy for school-age children, and adult therapy all translate well to telehealth. For very young children and for presentations requiring close physical observation, in-person is usually better. We talk through the best format at the discovery call.
What equipment do I need?
A laptop, tablet, or desktop with a camera and microphone, and a reliable internet connection. For paediatric sessions a quiet room with a desk or table works best. No special software, I send a session link before each appointment.
Can NDIS participants use telehealth?
Yes. NDIS covers telehealth speech pathology at the same rate as in-person sessions under Improved Daily Living (Capacity Building). Plan-managed and self-managed plans are welcome.
My child is five. Can they do telehealth?
It depends on the child and the goal. Some five-year-olds engage well with telehealth, especially with a parent in the room. Others need the more flexible setup of in-person sessions. I can assess suitability on the discovery call, and we can always switch format if it is not working.
