When school-based speech therapy makes sense
A few patterns come up most often when school-based sessions are the right choice. Your child’s communication goals are mostly about what happens in the classroom, not what happens at the dinner table. After-school appointments just do not work because of siblings, other activities, fatigue, or the logistics of Sydney traffic at 4pm. Your child already gets learning support at school and having the speech pathologist collaborating with the teaching team means goals reinforce each other across the school day, rather than therapy happening in a separate silo.
There are a few other situations where school-based makes particular sense. Your child is on an NDIS plan with goals specifically listed around school participation. Your child has autism or ADHD and genuinely struggles to transition from school to a clinic appointment late in the day when regulation is already low. The school has a learning support program and is used to outside providers. Your child is in a special support class or specialist setting where external providers are already part of how the school runs.
On the other hand, if your child’s goals are more about home and family communication rather than classroom skills, sessions in the home work better.
How school-based sessions are set up
Setup is usually straightforward once the process is clear, which is good because schools are not always set up to deal with external providers quickly. I have worked with most types of Sydney school: public primary, public high, Catholic primary and high, and a range of independent schools and specialist settings. The pattern is generally the same.
The first step is a conversation with the principal or learning support coordinator to confirm that external speech pathology is allowed under the school’s policy. Public schools in New South Wales and Catholic schools generally have standard processes for this, so it is rarely a hurdle. Independent schools are more variable. Once that is cleared, I send through my insurance certificate and current background check documents, which I keep up to date regardless. The last step is agreeing a time and a private space. Most schools can offer a meeting room, the learning support room, or a quiet classroom during a non-core lesson.
In the sessions themselves, I work one-to-one with the student. Between sessions, I check in with the classroom teacher and learning support staff so the strategies carry on through the week instead of only happening during my hour. Progress notes go to parents after every session. If parents want, a copy goes to the school too, with consent.
School Readiness Assessment Sydney
For children starting school in the following year, a school readiness assessment gives you a clear picture of where their communication skills sit against expected kindergarten demands. This includes vocabulary, sentence structure, following instructions, narrative language, phonological awareness (the sound-letter foundation for reading), and social communication.
The assessment produces a written report useful for the school’s learning support team. It identifies any areas where the child might struggle and what support would help. Assessments can happen at home, at preschool, or at the new primary school. Many families do this assessment in Term 3 or 4 of preschool year so there is time to act on the findings before school starts.

For special support programs and specialist schools, the setup is often quicker because the schools are set up for external providers as part of their standard model.
