How it helps

When community-based sessions make sense

Community speech therapy is a practical fit across many situations:

How it helps

Where community sessions happen

Preschools and long day care centres are the most common community setting for paediatric clients. I coordinate with the centre’s director to agree on a private space and a session time that does not disrupt the room routine. Most centres are welcoming of external speech pathologists, especially for children on NDIS plans.

Community disability hubs (day programs, activity centres, social support groups) are good settings for adolescents and adults with disability. Therapy goals can be built directly into the activities already happening at the hub, which often improves engagement over a clinical session.

Aged care facilities and supported-living accommodation are appropriate for older adults with acquired communication difficulties. Sessions happen in the resident’s room or a common area, whichever is quieter. I coordinate with facility staff around mealtimes, activity programs, and other routines.

For NDIS participants, community-based sessions often attract the same rate as home-based sessions, with travel calculated per the NDIS Price Guide. Private and Medicare clients are welcome; I quote community session rates and travel separately in the service agreement.

Parent Coaching for Communication Sydney

Parent coaching is often the highest-leverage intervention for young children with language delay. Rather than me working directly with the child for one hour a week, I coach the parent on specific strategies they use during everyday routines (bath time, meal time, book reading, play). The parent has hundreds of interactions a week. The therapist has one. The maths is obvious.

For many toddlers with early language delay, a parent coaching approach produces faster gains than direct child therapy. I use Hanen-style parent-led strategies adapted to what fits each family’s day. This is particularly effective for bilingual families, where the parent can deliver strategies in the home language.

AAC Therapy Sydney

Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) is any way of communicating that supplements or replaces speech. This includes high-tech devices (speech-generating iPads), low-tech tools (picture boards, key word signs), and gesture-based systems. AAC is useful for children and adults with complex communication needs, including non-speaking autistic individuals, children with cerebral palsy, and adults with motor neurone disease.

AAC assessment identifies the right system for the person’s current abilities and goals. I work with both low-tech and high-tech options, and I can collaborate with occupational therapists where physical access to a device is an issue. AAC therapy is fundable under NDIS Improved Daily Living.

Where I work

Community speech therapy across Sydney

I work across the Inner West, St George, Canterbury-Bankstown, and Eastern Suburbs. Common session locations include preschools and centres in Arncliffe, Tempe, Rockdale, Hurstville, Marrickville, Bankstown, Bexley, Kogarah, and Burwood. For community hubs and aged care facilities, I cover the same geographic area within 30 km of Arncliffe.

Bilingual sessions are available in English and Mandarin. For other languages, TIS National interpreters can attend community sessions for NDIS participants at no cost.

Community Speech Therapy questions

Make an enquiry
Will the preschool or day care accept an outside speech pathologist?
Most do, especially for children on NDIS plans. I handle the liaison with the centre’s director, provide insurance and background-check documents, and agree on arrangements before the first session. Centres generally welcome support providers when the process is clear.
Can you run parent coaching instead of direct child therapy?
Yes. For toddlers with early language delay and for busy families, parent coaching is often more effective than direct child sessions. I use Hanen-style strategies adapted to what fits your family’s day.
Do you work in aged care facilities?
Yes. I visit residents in aged care and supported-living accommodation across the service area. Funding options include Home Care Packages, NDIS (for eligible residents), and private pay.
Can AAC be set up during community sessions?
Yes. AAC assessment and setup can happen in the community setting where the device will be used. This usually produces better uptake than setting up AAC in a clinic and hoping it transfers to daily life.
