Can sessions happen at my child's school near Steel Park?

Yes, when the school allows outside providers. Ferncourt Public School, Marrickville West Public School and Undercliffe Public School are all within about 750 m of the park. Sessions at school mean your child practises in the room where they need the skill, and there is no 4pm dash through Sydney traffic for an after-school appointment.

Setting it up starts with a conversation with the principal or learning support coordinator, to check that outside speech pathology is allowed under the school's policy. Then I work alongside your child's teacher, so the goals match what happens in class: following instructions, explaining ideas, and reading and spelling. Speech Pathology Australia explains that a true communication disorder shows up in every language a child speaks, and that switching to English only does not fix it.

Assessment

What does a first assessment involve?

An assessment takes one or two sessions and has four parts:

  1. Standardised tests. Tools that compare your child's results with other children the same age. Which ones I use depends on whether the concern is speech sounds, language or reading.
  2. Watching your child communicate. Play for younger children, conversation for older ones. A test score shows where a child sits; everyday talk shows how they use language.
  3. Talking with you. You know how your child communicates at home better than any test can show.
  4. A written report in plain English. Results, what they mean day to day, and clear recommendations a GP, teacher or NDIS planner can act on.

Call or send an enquiry. We start with a free 15-minute discovery call about what you or your child's teacher has noticed, and I'll tell you honestly whether an assessment is worth doing. You don't need a referral. I work with NDIS (self-managed and plan-managed), Medicare with an eligible GP referral, DVA, Home Care Packages and private clients.
