Fitting it in

Can speech therapy fit around work?

At the 2021 Census, 37.8% of Marrickville families were couples with children and 16.1% were one-parent families. For many of them, a 4pm appointment across town is the hardest part of therapy.

Yes. Three set-ups work well for working parents near the station:

  • Sessions at school, in school hours. St Brigid's Catholic Primary School, Marrickville West Public School and Marrickville Public School are all within about a kilometre of the station. Your child is seen during the day and you get notes on what we worked on.
  • Telehealth. Video sessions suit older children, teenagers and adults, and a parent can join from wherever they are.
  • A mix. Home visits in the school holidays, then school or video sessions during busy terms.

More on each: school-based speech therapy and telehealth speech therapy.

At school

What do school sessions work on?

Goals come from what your child finds hard in class. Common ones:

  • following spoken instructions the first time
  • explaining an idea or retelling a story in order
  • speech sounds that make a child hard to understand
  • reading, spelling and writing, which build on spoken language

Reading and talking are closely linked. When a child struggles to read, the cause is often how they hear and handle the sounds in words, so I work on the links between sounds and letters. That skill carries over to words your child has never seen, which drilling a list of sight words does not.

I start with a conversation with the principal or learning support coordinator to check that outside speech pathology is allowed, then work with the teacher so the same goals are practised across the day. For reading and spelling, see literacy and reading support.

Progress

How will I know therapy is working?

You'll see it in writing. Goals are set after the assessment in plain English, so everyone knows what success looks like. After every visit I send short progress notes on what we worked on and what to practise, which matters when you can't be there for a school-day session.

Every 10 to 12 sessions we review the goals together and decide what comes next. For NDIS participants, speech therapy is one of the NDIS therapy supports, and I write the annual progress report your plan review needs, and reports can go to your GP or your child's teacher when you ask.

Between sessions, a few minutes of practice built into your normal routine (the drive to school, dinner, bath time) does more than any single session.

Getting started

How do I start?

Send an enquiry or call, and we book a free 15-minute discovery call at a time that suits your work day. I'll tell you honestly whether an assessment is worth doing. You don't need a referral. I work with NDIS (self-managed and plan-managed), Medicare with an eligible GP referral, DVA, Home Care Packages and private clients.

Questions Marrickville parents ask

Make an enquiry
Can you see my child at school during the day?
Yes, when the school allows outside providers. Your child is seen in school hours, so there is no rush across town after work, and you get notes afterwards on what we covered.
Can I join a telehealth session from work?
Yes. Video sessions work from anywhere in Australia, and a parent can join for part or all of the session.
Can you write a report for my child's school or NDIS plan?
Yes. Every assessment comes with a written report in plain English, with results and recommendations a teacher, GP or NDIS planner can act on.
How does Medicare work for speech therapy?
With an eligible Medicare GP referral, part of the cost of a set number of sessions can be claimed back. Talk to your GP first, then send me the referral.
Do you see teenagers near Marrickville Station?
Yes. Teenagers often prefer telehealth or a session at school, and the goals focus on what they need in class and with friends.
Do you work with adults near Marrickville Station?
Yes. I see adults at home or by video for communication after a stroke or brain injury, and for voice difficulties.
Is travel charged for Marrickville?
No. Marrickville is inside my core service area, so travel is included in the session rate.
Do I need a referral?
No. You can contact me directly. A GP referral is only needed if you want to use Medicare.
