At home

Can you do sessions in an apartment?

Yes. Most Rockdale homes are apartments: at the 2021 Census, 69.5% of homes in Rockdale were flats or apartments. A small table or a quiet corner with the TV off is all a session needs, and I bring every book, game and assessment tool with me.

For children, a parent or carer joins in, so you see each strategy and can keep using it between sessions. Sessions run 45 to 60 minutes; younger children do best with 45. More on home visits: mobile speech therapy. If brothers or sisters are home, it helps if they're busy elsewhere for the hour.

Languages

Can my child be assessed in more than one language?

In most Rockdale homes, a language other than English is spoken: 72.8% of Rockdale households used a language other than English at home in 2021, against 29.5% across NSW, and Nepali was the most common, used by 16.1% of residents. Rockdale is also a young suburb, with a median age of 34 and 912 children under five.

I assess and treat in English and Mandarin, so Mandarin-speaking children are tested fairly in both languages. Read more about bilingual speech therapy. If your family speaks Nepali, Macedonian or another language, keep speaking it at home. Speech Pathology Australia explains that dropping the home language does not fix a communication disorder.

Next steps

What happens after I get in touch?

Most families have a clear plan within two to three weeks of contacting me. The steps are:

  1. Discovery call. A free 15-minute conversation about what you have noticed.
  2. Assessment. One or two sessions, then a written report with results and recommended goals.
  3. Therapy plan. Goals, how often we meet and where, written in plain English.
  4. Regular sessions. Progress notes after every visit, with a review every 10 to 12 sessions.

Reports can be shared with your GP, school or treating team when you ask.

Adults

Can you help an adult after a hospital stay?

Yes. St George Hospital is just over 1 km from the park, and after a stroke or brain injury, speech therapy often continues at home once someone is discharged. I see adults at home for aphasia (difficulty finding, saying or understanding words after a brain injury), for clearer speech and for voice problems. The Stroke Foundation reports that one in three stroke survivors have difficulty communicating.

For aphasia work, a family member joins some sessions, because the people at home are the person's daily conversation partners. More detail: adult speech therapy.

Questions Rockdale families ask

Make an enquiry
Can sessions happen in our apartment?
Yes. A table or a quiet corner is enough. I bring all the materials, and sessions run 45 to 60 minutes.
We speak Nepali at home. Can you still help my child?
Yes. I work in English and Mandarin, and I encourage you to keep speaking Nepali at home. A real speech or language difficulty shows up in both languages, so your home language is part of the picture, never the cause.
Can you assess my child in Mandarin?
Yes. I run assessments in English, Mandarin or both, so a child who hears Mandarin at home gets a fair picture of what they can do in each language.
Can you see my father at home after St George Hospital?
Yes. I see adults at home after a stroke or brain injury, and a family member is welcome at every session. Funding can come from Medicare with a GP referral, a Home Care Package, DVA or private pay.
Do you work with NDIS participants in Rockdale?
Yes, if the plan is self-managed or plan-managed. Speech therapy is paid from the Capacity Building budget, under Improved Daily Living, when the plan has a communication goal.
Is travel charged for Rockdale?
No. Rockdale is inside my core service area, so travel is included in the session rate.
Do I need a referral?
No. You can contact me directly. A GP referral is only needed if you want to use Medicare.
