Can you help after a stroke or brain injury?

Yes. After a stroke or brain injury, many people have aphasia: difficulty finding, saying or understanding words. Others have slurred speech or trouble following a conversation. Therapy at home works on the conversations that matter in daily life, at the table where they happen. The Stroke Foundation reports that one in three stroke survivors have difficulty communicating.

For aphasia work, I recommend a family member joins some sessions. The people at home are the person's daily conversation partners, and small changes in how they talk can make a big difference. More detail: adult speech therapy.

I also see adults for voice difficulties: a voice that is hoarse, tired or hard to hear. See voice therapy.

Older residents

Who do you see around Earlwood?

Earlwood's population is older than the state's. At the 2021 Census, its median age was 44, against 39 across NSW, and 3,730 of its 18,053 residents were 65 or older.

65 to 694.8%70 to 744.8%75 to 794.1%80 to 843.5%85 and over3.5%
Share of Earlwood residents in each age group (ABS 2021 Census): 20.7% are 65 or older.

For older people, home visits avoid travel when mobility, fatigue or health makes it hard. Sessions run 45 to 60 minutes, depending on the goal and the person.

Conditions

Which conditions do you work with in adults?

  • Aphasia. Difficulty finding words, understanding, reading or writing after a stroke or brain injury.
  • Dysarthria. Slurred or unclear speech because the muscles for speech are weaker or less coordinated.
  • Cognitive-communication difficulties. Trouble with memory, attention and following a conversation, common after a brain injury.
  • Progressive conditions. Parkinson's disease, motor neurone disease and multiple sclerosis change speech over time. Starting therapy early builds strategies, and planning for AAC (aids that support or replace speech) can begin before it is urgent.
  • Voice. Hoarseness that keeps coming back, a voice that tires by the end of the day, or loss of volume. If a structural vocal cord problem is possible, I arrange a referral to an ENT specialist.

Under a Home Care Package, I work within the package budget and coordinate directly with the care coordinator, so the family doesn't have to manage the paperwork.

Adults going back to work after a brain injury often come to me with word-finding and organisation problems that the rest of their rehabilitation hasn't covered. Sessions can happen at home or, anywhere in NSW, by telehealth.

Questions Earlwood families ask

Make an enquiry
Can you see my mum at home after she leaves hospital?
Yes. I see adults at home after a stroke or brain injury, and a family member is welcome at every session. Therapy at home has strong evidence behind it, particularly for stroke rehabilitation.
Does a Home Care Package cover speech pathology?
It can. Speech pathology for voice and communication support can be paid from a Home Care Package. Your package provider confirms what is available in your budget.
Do you accept DVA cards?
Yes. I work with DVA Gold and White Card holders.
Can speech therapy help with Parkinson's disease?
Yes. Parkinson's often makes the voice quieter and speech less clear over time. Starting therapy early builds strategies while they are easiest to learn, and planning for communication aids can begin before they are needed.
Do you send reports to the GP?
Yes, when you ask. I write progress notes after every visit, and reports can be shared with your GP or treating team.
Can I call on behalf of my parent?
Yes. A family member, carer or case manager can make the first call, and we start with a free 15-minute discovery call.
Do you also see children near Beaman Park?
Yes. I see children at home, at school and by telehealth across Earlwood and the surrounding suburbs.
